I like Cowboy Bebop because it is the story of cool guys and dolls (also Eins). That even though Spike dies because of his old ties, his old loves, those ties are what help him "find out if I'm really alive." It rejects the notion that our fictions are unworthy of the effort we put into telling them. Maybe it keeps us anchored to the imaginary loves that imbue our lives with meaning. We could drop the weight - abandon all attachment - but maybe the weight isn't a bad thing. It's existential because it acknowledges the weight of our story is going to be there, but we'll shoulder it all the same. This is where Cowboy Bebop shines because "You're gonna carry that weight" is not "You will suffocate on experience and be crushed by hard circumstance." "You're gonna carry that weight" is affirmative. Scarred by the arbitrary cruelty of war, he succombs to nihilism. Even with all the connections she has in virtual space, she can't move beyond that initial abandonment and eventually leaves the Bebop to track down her dad.Įven our villain Vicious is haunted. Ed is competent and resourceful, yet the abandonment of her father means she wants to find a surrogate family in the Bebop crew. Even the lack of a past is a past that dictates choice.Įd wants to re-enter the family orbit. That scramble to find the stability of a personal story leaves her detached and mistrusting. She doesn't know who she is after she wakes up. As if they were searching frantically for proof that they were alive.'What a beautiful show this. The presence of absence anchors her to drifting. Jet, despite having his episode dedicated to recovering from the residue of his past life, still retains the virtuous curiosity that made him leave the police force. His sense of honor in the criminal underworld shackles his decision making. He feels bound by obligation to the people he left behind in the Syndicate. Spike can't move beyond his violent youth. "You're gonna carry that weight" describes how burdened our futures are because we have this story of our past telling us who we are and what we have to do. There is some gravity that even space ships can't escape.
